On 22 October 2021, board members and staff of Kanisa Regulated Non-WDT SACCO visited Soon Big Brain Children’s Home and School in Kinoo, Kiambu County. Representing the Society were the Vice Chairman Nelson Opany, Director Geoffrey Alemba, Chief Executive Officer Godfrey Mwangi, Finance & Administration Manager Charity Mwangi, and the Customer Relations & Business Development Officer Maureen Mukungu.
The team was received by Rev. Christine Muthoni Maina who founded and runs the facility with the help of her family members and a few staff. Founded in 1981, the children’s home supports 16 children while the primary school has a pupil population of 144 including children drawn from the neighbouring community. For 40 years the institution has moulded the lives of abandoned and neglected children drawn from as far as Busia and Turkana and the surrounding community. Many of them have gone on to make a good life for themselves and even start their own families. With Kanisa SACCO commemorating its 40th Anniversary this year, it was co-incidental that the 40-year-old institution was selected as the beneficiary of this year’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.
During the visit the team interacted with the staff and shared words of encouragement with the young children. They also talked to them about the importance of saving and encouraged them to aspire to become people who can manage their finances well for their sake and that of their dependents. Additionally, they presented food items and teaching and learning material as donations from the SACCO.
Speaking during the event, the Vice Chairman Nelson Opany said to the children, “We want you to study hard and become like your teachers and even more. Be children who respect your teachers, your friends and everybody else. And when it comes the time when you begin to make your own money, know that it is important to save.”
On her part, Rev. Muthoni greatly appreciated the SACCO saying, “We cannot thank you enough for coming. You have brought us a lot of food that will take us for a few weeks and material for the children to learn with. We welcome you again to come and help our children to learn about money as young as they are so that when they grow up, they will become responsible with resources accorded to them.”
This charitable event was part of Kanisa SACCO’s 40th Anniversary commemoration activities. The main celebrations are scheduled to take place on 4th December 2021.
